The holiday season is about giving for Kathy Bates.
The Amsterdam woman said she spends the weeks leading up to Christmas looking for ways to help a variety of groups try to make the holiday brighter for needy families. It’s an effort that hits very close to home, she explained.

The Amsterdam woman said she spends the weeks leading up to Christmas looking for ways to help a variety of groups try to make the holiday brighter for needy families. It’s an effort that hits very close to home, she explained.

“People were there to help us when we needed it, so it’s important for us to give back,” she explained. “Every week, we have a new place to donate to.”

On Saturday, Bates and her daughter, Arielle, were among about 75 people who came to the Riverfront Center for Toy Jam II. The event is the brainchild of the Boston-based band 13 Yards to Victory, which performed in October at Amsterdam High School.

The five-man band, whose members range in age from 18 to 22, hosted Toy Jam I last year in its hometown and decided to take it on the road this year. Amsterdam is the first stop on a whirlwind tour that will also hit venues in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

“It’s kids helping kids, that’s what it’s all about,” said guitar player Vinny Prezioso.

The band played a stripped-down, 45-minute set for people who donated a new, unwrapped toy with a minimum value of $5. All the toys collected Saturday will be donated to the Sanford Stud Farm, which will also be accepting donations for its annual toy drive during a holiday celebration at the farm from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 12, 13, 19 and 20.

Patrick Boles, the farm’s caretaker, said all the toys collected are then distributed to needy families in Montgomery County through the county’s Department of Social Services.

AMSTERDAM – The Boston-based band Thirteen Yards to Victory is expected to host a toy drive this weekend at the Riverfront Center.

Toy Jam II will kick off in Amsterdam Saturday as the band’s way of thanking the community for allowing them to test their 2010 tour on Amsterdam High School students.

Thirteen Yards to Victory played two shows at Amsterdam High School in October to test their I’m An American Dreamer project, which is a cross country tour that raises money and awareness about music and art education programs in schools.

“The people were so good to us. They were helpful and responsive and gave us great feedback on our social media sites,” band manager Fred Balboni said. “It really helps in putting a show together especially one that you are going to put on the road.”

Now the band wants to give back to the community.

Toy Jam II will essentially be a concert at the Riverfront Center Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring at minimum a $5, unwrapped, new toy, which will be distributed locally to families in need by the Friends of the Sanford Stud Farm.

Given the response after the Amsterdam High School shows, Balboni said they are expecting a large crowd.

The band is expected to be available after the show to hang out with fans, sign autographs and take pictures.

Band member Vinny Prezioso, 20, said he is excited to come back to Amsterdam.

“We were just there a few months ago and it’s going to be cool to come back and do something positive,” he said. “We can’t wait to see everyone this weekend.”

The show is sponsored locally by the Rotary Club of Amsterdam, Catholic Charities and America’s Best Value Inn along with WCSS 1490AM, which will broadcasting the live concert.

Who needs a Grammy when you have a pizza named after your band? Boston emo rockers Thirteen Yards to Victory had their own Dreamer Pizza created for them by Rustic Kitchen executive chef Tom Holloway. The pie, named for the band’s EP, ‘American Dreamers,’ is topped with 13 ingredients (natch), including the Kowloon’s trademarked Saugus Wing Sauce, and is only available at Nicks Place, in Saugus Center and Winthrop.

A culinary victory? We’ll let you decide . . .

In what may seem like an answered prayer to a slew of local teenagers, it was announced Sunday that Anthony, Thomas, Ryan and Dave will return to Amsterdam this week.

For anyone who doesn’t know, that’s Vinny Prezioso, Thomas Iannello, Ryan Passariello and Dave Rossi – members of the Boston-based band 13 Yards to Victory, who played Amsterdam High School’s Bert DeRose Theater in October.

“We were so shocked at the way everything went,” said Prezioso. “It was a really positive experience and to be able to come back now, we’ll actually be helping people we know.”

This time, the band will do more than just perform its rock songs for a group of now-devout fans. The main purpose of the visit will be to accumulate toys that will be distributed to needy children in Amsterdam.

The band calls it Toy Jam II, and it will kick off this year on Saturday in the Riverfront Center. It’s a continuation of a successful event that was held in the group’s Massachusetts hometown last year, in which every person in attendance was required to bring a new, unwrapped toy of a $5 minimum value to be donated to local families.

“It generated tons of gifts,” said Prezioso. “We wanted to expand it, we didn’t want to keep it in our hometown.”

Third Ward Alderman-elect and current Greater Amsterdam School District Board of Education President Gina DeRossi, who also does public relations work for the band, suggested that Amsterdam be the first stop for Toy Jam II. Other stops include Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

“They’re really excited to come back and to do this for the city,” said DeRossi.

Fred Balboni, manager of 13 YTV, said that this is the band’s way to give back to the community where they received such positive feedback in October.

“Amsterdam is a great, small-knit community and we love that,” he said.

After their performance at AHS, 13 YTV gained over 600 new fans on the band’s Facebook page. Many of the comments left by AHS students on the page included pleas for the band to return to the city.

Additionally, Prezioso said that on the day of the performance, the band’s Web site, (www.13ytv.com), received its highest amount of hits.

“This year it’s going to be cool because I feel like we’ve really built a fan base in Amsterdam,” he said.

The Sanford Stud Farm, which has its own toy drive every year, will partner with the event to identify needy families in the area and distribute the toys accordingly. DeRossi is in the process of trying to obtain a sound system for the event, without which 13 YTV will perform an acoustic set.

“One way or the other they’ll be performing,” she said.

Sponsors WCSS 1490 also plan to broadcast the performance live on-air.

Prezioso said he and his band mates will also be on hand to sign autographs and take pictures for anyone who pays the low admission price of one new toy of a $5 or more value.

“Everyone wins,” said Prezioso.

The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Riverfront Center.

Photo caption: Thirteen Yards to Victory, including singer Anthony DiPerri and Dave Rossi, right, on bass, took to the stage of the Bert DeRose Theater at Amsterdam High School on Wednesday to bring their message of community service.

The performances at Amsterdam High School that kicked off a tour for Boston-based band Thirteen Yards to Victory on Wednesday were not exactly what band members had expected.

“I thought it might have be an awkward situation,” said guitar player Vinny Prezioso. “But it exceeded our expectations. There was a lot of energy for 9:30 in the morning.”

Four hours later when 13 YTV played its second show of the day for the 11th- and 12th-graders, the energy, momentum, and screams had only gained. By the time the band ripped into its fifth song off its new EP, “American Dreamers,” the hundreds of students in the Bert DeRose Theater were on their feet.

“This is all new to us,” said Prezioso. “Hopefully we can inspire someone about something.”

The band’s performances at AHS will serve as the prototype for an upcoming tour of high schools across the nation, as part of a community service initiative the band has dedicated itself to, an initiative that has brought the band recognition from the White House and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

“We want to be a band that does more than music,” said Prezioso. “This is a mission.”

Before 13 YTV took to the stage, the band was introduced by AHS Principal David Ziskin, who said that he hopes to be able to provide more assemblies that embrace different types of learning and advocate the positive message of community service. He also praised Gina DeRossi, Greater Amsterdam School District board of education president and 3rd Ward candidate for alderman, who does public relations work for the band and was instrumental in bringing the group to AHS.

And then Ziskin asked the students to do something he’d never before requested of them. He asked them to take out their cell phones and turn them on, which, as students readied themselves to capture the moment, became the only light in the theater.

Student Sicily Bernardo was excited to see the show for a couple of reasons.

“We actually get to do something,” she said. “And the boys are really cute.”

Chelsey Crosby said she’d heard the band before and liked its pop punk/alternative rock sounds, but Gabriella Mercado said she hadn’t heard of 13 YTV until it was announced they’d be visiting the school.

“We looked them up online and I liked their music,” said Mercado.

Eleventh-graders Maria Mosso and Angela Damiano hadn’t heard any of 13 YTV’s music before seeing the band on stage, but both said they liked the songs and high-energy performance.

“They’ll be on my iPod,” said Damiano.

The band members will return to AHS today without their instruments and amplifiers, as they participate in peer education sessions during regularly scheduled music classes.

“It’s really good for us because we have such a strong music program,” said Superintendent Thomas Perillo. “It’s going to send the kids a nice message of what they can do with music.”

The peer education sessions are planned to be an important piece of the band’s upcoming tour of high schools, which also includes a contest where the band will donate proceeds from its EP to music education in school districts.

“For me personally, I was in the high school band and the arts and music and theater is all so important,” said bass player Dave Rossi. “This just feels like a really good thing.”

The group, which recently received a proclamation from Mayor Ann Thane and the Common Council and on Wednesday was presented with a proclamation from Assemblyman George Amedore, R-Rotterdam, said the possibility of returning to AHS on the full tour hasn’t been ruled out.

“The response we’ve gotten so far is so good that I can definitely see that we’d come back to Amsterdam,” said Rossi.
