Boston-based Rockers to Speak the Universal Language of Music to Peer Educate on the Value of Community Service

Amsterdam, New York—October 7, 2009—Utilizing the universal language of music, Boston, Mass.-based international recording artists Thirteen Yards to Victory will rock the Bert DeRose Theater at Amsterdam High School, in Amsterdam, N.Y. with two school community performances on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The group will return to the school on Thursday, October 15, 2009, to take part in peer education sessions during regularly scheduled music classes. Amsterdam is a historic, centuries-old, former Dutch settlement located on the banks of the Mohawk River.

The two shows at the school are closed to the public and are for students and invited guests only. However, radio station WCSS 1490-AM will be broadcasting the first concert LIVE, in its entirety, from the high school, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The band also will be interviewed on WCSS beginning at 11 a.m. To listen online, visit www.wcss1490.com.

The American Dreamers tour is designed to highlight the power of community while illustrating 13YTV’s commitment to raise revenue to support music and art education programs across America.

In a proclamation presented by Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane to the entire Common Council on October 6th, 13 YTV received an official endorsement and welcome to the City of Amsterdam.

The upstate-New York high school, known for its stellar music programs, was selected at the urging of Greater Amsterdam School District (GASD) Board of Education President Gina M. DeRossi who made an impassioned plea for the White House-recognized band to preview its upcoming American Dreamers Concert Tour and I’m an American Dreamer campaign at her high school alma mater.

“Over the past year and a half, I have gotten the chance to work very closely with these five incredibly talented, generous musicians and am honored to be able to bring them to my hometown to share their inspirational music with our high school students and community as a whole,” said Gina DeRossi. “I thank the band for choosing Amsterdam to premiere their tour and jumpstart their I’m an American Dreamer campaign and contest.”

GASD Superintendent Thomas Perillo believes that the band’s visit fits well with the district’s recently established curriculum focusing on service to the community.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to see and talk with five very successful musicians and will add to the enthusiasm of our music program in the district as well as encourage the student to follow their dreams,” said Perillo.

“The peer education classes fit nicely in the construct of our curriculum, and I am excited that our students will talk with members of the band in such a setting.”

20-year-old, 13 YTV guitarist and vocalist Vinny Prezioso added, “Music is my life. It’s how I express myself to the world. I believe music is very powerful and I hope our public service commitment will inspire others to use their own talents, whether in music or not, to benefit people in the community.”

Inspired by President Barack Obama’s United We Serve campaign and The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, the band’s project is designed to tap into the diversity that is America while providing a measurable financial impact on music and education programs across the United States, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.

13 YTV vocalist and bass player Dave Rossi added, “As a bunch of guys who recently graduated from high school, we can’t imagine not having had programs like marching band, art, or theater. We, and so many of our friends, benefitted greatly from having these kinds of programs in our schools.”

On Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 13 YTV released an EP titled American Dreamers, co-produced by the band and music industry powerhouse Ken Lewis (Usher, Fall Out Boy, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z) a major-label, Diamond, multi-Platinum, multiple-Grammy Award winning mix engineer, musician and vocalist. American Dreamers is being distributed by Tunecore, with 100% of the profit generated from this exclusive digital download benefiting arts and music education across America.

“I first heard the demos that would become the American Dreamers EP and was blown away by the range of talent in this band. Within one band, it’s rare to find two exceptional singers as well as a musical and songwriting force that I am personally envious of,” said Lewis.

The band successfully solicited and received the support of members of Congress headed by former Massachusetts United States Senator Edward M. Kennedy.  In his last official comment on community service, the Senator wrote the following statement of support to the band shortly before he lost his hard fought battle with brain cancer at age 77.

“I commend the members of Thirteen Yards to Victory for responding so well to President Obama’s call to encourage young men and women to become involved in community service,” wrote Kennedy. “The ‘I’m an American Dreamer’ project demonstrates the band’s strong commitment to help America meet its most pressing challenges by putting their talents to work for communities across the country,” he concluded.

Last month, United States Senator John Kerry spoke about the band from the floor of the United States Senate. Addressing Vice President Joe Biden and his fellow senators, he said, “This remarkable group of young people is dedicated to helping others…they are setting a wonderful example for their peers-showing them that everybody has the capacity to make a positive difference in their own way.” He continued, “because of what they are doing, more of our youth will be able to enjoy and learn about the arts and develop their own skills.”
